HISTORY
Alexandra Constantinescu (born 1981) is an artist from Cluj-Napoca, who has been working for nearly seven years in her studio, developing unique design objects and limited series, made in porcelain or faience. Suitable for a sometimes slightly undetermined home use, the objects she creates are identifiable by the fact that she playfully goes around the classical ergonomic principle, introducing instead the notion of the decorative element that bears functionality.

2019 // The Color of White
The Color of White is an image-and-text installation advanced with the medium of ceramics. It searches for a more profound understanding of the material. This new preoccupation of the artist for how the things are perceived developed from the simplest question: “What is white?” Using tiles made from recycled white clay, the classic checkered pattern and a substitute text, the work suggests realities that are hidden beneath the layer of immediate interpretation. It is known that in ceramics, in order to obtain some bright colors it is required to use high-risk substances. The artist declares as sufficient, creative and safe the alternative formula of inferring optical black only by reading its name. At the heart of this project is the determination to pursue a sustainable practice within this field and to speak of a way in which designers and ceramic creators could manage the materials, the techniques and the concepts as to develop objects that are not toxic to humans and nature.

The decorative tridimensional parts stand for classical handlers, providing minimal gripping points. The object can be manipulated by the creative engagement of these contact areas. In the same time, a revival of the tactile sense and of the conscious choice for living in the present moment is ensured. By introducing a minor difficulty in gripping a mug or lifting a lid, Alexandra Constantinescu helps the user to become aware of the shape and tactility of the object, the preciousness of the content, pinpointing a moment of escaping the mechanical mind-less repetition of daily common actions.
