HISTORY
With a background in architecture, product design gradually became Ruxi's main interests as a result of studying traditional architecture, materials and culture. She holds an Master in Historic Conservation from Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom and a Degree in Architecture from “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture, Bucharest, Romania.

SPECIFIC
Ruxi’s work is trying to explore the relation between local identity and contemporary design in order to create simple objects that serve as a background for our everyday life. Her inspiration comes from experimenting and understanding the qualities of the materials themselves and from the practical use of the object. Through design she aims to create objects that respond to daily needs and that acquire and pass on stories of daily life.

ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2017 // THREADS OF TRADITION @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK // HONEST GOODS (Pro Patrimonio by Andreea Machidon, Ruxandra Sacaliș, Veronica Olariu)
The Collection presents a family of objects — a brand of their place of origin, bringing together contemporary design and local crafts traditions. It presents variants of utensils, cooking and serving vessels, light fittings, and fabrics, which is to say, versatile objects, whereby it is possible to follow the process, the experiment and the designer/craftsman relationship. The collection includes objects realized in the exploratory spirit of the Pro Patrimonio Foundation: useful and honest in relation to the history and the cultural landscape from around the Golescu Villa from Câmpulung Muscel.

2017 // THREADS OF TRADITION @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK // Chamotte Series

2015 // Chamotte
Ceramic pots have appeared as a need to store food/produce once man made the transition from nomadic lifestyle to creating settlements and practice agriculture. The current pottery design project explores the functional and aesthetic properties of a mixture of clay and chamotte dust which needs only one firing process in order to create objects that are suitable for food and liquid storage and for daily use. The chamotte dust helps reduce shrinkage in drying and firing and gives strength to the final fired product. It does not need a second firing process or glazing. In addition, its rough tactile qualities makes the final object appealing to the sense of touch. The present project consists of 3 food containers and a flower vase/fruit bowl. The latter has a double function: a flower vase that has a large base meant to collect the flower petals as they gradually fall and a fruit bowl.

2014 // WOOD&WOOL capsule exhibition // Tre.foil stool

2014 // RDW MAIN EXHIBITION // Tre.foil stool
tre.foil is a simple wooden stool that explores the rural culture, particularly the traditional hand-crafted wooden objects. The inspiration comes from the traditional three-legged stool that in most regions of Romania accompanied the low table that gathered the family around the hearth in a farmer’s house. The bond between the farmer and its objects was defined by the craft and knowledge used in realising them. The simplicity in function and construction of the crafted objects shows their relationship with the user: to serve his daily activities around the farm. The current stool tries to explore this balanced relationship between function, construction and craft, but finding contemporary means of expression through the wooden joints. The structure of the stool and the way it is constructed is meant to be easily understood and to define its aesthetic features.

2014 // RDW MAIN EXHIBITION // Bring us together table
Bring us together is a low coffee table with decorative patterns reminiscent from the traditional motifs which remind of flower petals.
