HISTORY
SPOONFOOL is a project about whimsical ceramics. It started off as an experiment in 2016, first in the minds then underneath the hands of Claudiu and Alisa, two graphic designers inspired by random objects they brought from road trips.
SPECIFIC
Longing to give shape and make use of beautiful waste such as driftwood, debris from forests or misplaced branches, the duo looked for ways to marry the wood to other materials, so they completed the shapes with ceramics.
ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES
2018 // SPOONFOOL
Whimsical ceramics for external use. The utensils you see are functional kitchen equipment, unusual yet reliable. Every knobbed branch was matched with one of the scoops - ladle, skimmer, spatula, draining spoon, spreading knives and forks. The scoops and other functional parts are shaped by hand out of earthenware, a very organic and simple clay body. Its uneven surface, paired with the shine of the ceramic glaze, creates a nice contrast to the wood.
The oldest techniques are used to shape the scoops, such as pinch pottery, where the shape slowly emerges by pinching a ball of clay multiple times in the curve of one's palm. These techniques have been around for thousands of years, they are rather straightforward, but also permissive.
The joint on each piece is a combination of gluing with raisin and carpentry inspired wooden dowels.
All materials are environmentally friendly and food safe. The wood is treated with mineral oil.
