HISTORY
Starting from a personal need, Ciprian Manda started in 2009 a long period of study and experimentation in the design world, with an eye on the craft, the technical side, but also on the history and culture of design.

SPECIFIC
He is an architect by trade, with working experience on large projects, which required a lot of detailing and involment in the act of construction.

ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2019 // CUB Cupboard
The simple geometry of the main oak body contains, at a closer examination, a complex series of details, which mixes oak and steel. The piece’s utility is hidden in a playful way, by treating in the same manner all of the cupboard’s sides. It invites to a tactile exploration of its interior secrets. Traditional wood joinery is enhanced by complex steelworks and a mix of wood and metal. By using a double cantilevered base, the visual effect is that of floating, of lightness. The gentle swinging induced by the elastic base, adds further playfulness to the design.

2018 // L cupboard
The cupboard started as a study of a composition between the vertical and the horizontal. The leap from the simple sketch to a real complex object is possible through a series of specific joinery details. The statically nature of the design is interrupted by a series of diagonals, which turns it away from a barren design.

Beyond the immediate utility to store belongings it’s role is extended to a totem object, further enhanced by the beauty if the wood grain.
The attention to details is not limited to just the front arc, the attention to details also present at the back. The asymmetric play of the drawers’ fronts is replaced in the back by a clear rhythm of oak elements, which gently curves when taking corners.

2017 // THREADS OF TRADITION @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK // DELTACRAFT COLLECTION (by Ciprian Manda, Emese Pop, Ana Botezatu)
DELTACRAFT is aimed at revitalizing traditional crafts in the Danube Delta area through the collaboration be¬tween local artisans and contemporary designers. Together they created a collection of objects inspired by culture, history, resources and tech¬niques typical for this region. The objects are a symbolic representation of locally sourced raw materials, of community food and power, memory of place and heritage.

Traditional artisans from the Danube Delta area teamed up with designers and curators and founders of KraftMade, Marlene Stanciu and Mihai Sibianu and created a manifest of the constellation of practices and discourses of the 12 cohabiting ethnic groups in the area. The DeltaCraft project has been initiated by The Centre for Sustainable Policies Ecopolis, in partnership with KraftMade and „Gavrilă Simion” Institute of ecomuseology Research Tulcea (ICEM).

2016 // Desk
A minimalist desk, made of a single large overhang, which serves as the working surface. Without any other supports, the thin table top seems to be floating. The formal solution is possible due to the use of a solid oak construction and traditional dovetail joinery. This allows for strong structural nodes, without any metal connectors. The natural grain of the oak planks is enhanced through brushing and has a oil finish. The structural construction of the piece is explained through the exposed dovetail joinery. In order to enhance the thinnest of the desk, the thickness varies.

2016 // Stool
A minimalist stool, made of a single overhang, which serves as the seat.

2016 // Bench
A minimalist bench, made of a double overhang, which serves as the seat.

2016 // Bar stool
A minimalist bar stool, made of a double overhang, which serves as the seat.

2016 // Shelves
A minimalist shelf system, made of a complex overhang, which serves as the shelves.
