HISTORY
Carla studied fine arts and started out in the advertising business and followed up with interior design. She’s Bucharest based and she’s one of the artists that make our home town a better, more exciting city to live in. In 2004, she started taking her first steps in jewelry making. In the years to come, Carla has become one of the main local jewelers, each new collection bringing a new angle of her witty take on the world. One of the most relevant Romanian contemporary designers, Carla Szabo has been creating subtle yet intricate pieces of jewelry, accessories and objects of an architectural precision, for more than 12 years. Carla translates the inner life of people into jewelry exploring themes that represent the intimate experiences of a human being, experiences that unite us people, in spite of any apparent differences.
SPECIFICHer work is gracefully and effortlessly bouncing from conceptual design to intelligent perennial favorites but also to fun pieces. Her multi-faceted style found kindred spirits in many of the local fashion designers (Anamaria Lungu, Kinga Varga, Ana Alexe, Irina Marinescu, Oana Manolescu, Stephan Pelger, Irina Schrotter, Lucian Broscatean, Dan Zarug (TwentyTwo), etc.). For each, she created pieces to complete their collections, equally customized to their style and message as well as keeping a personal edge.
The materials she uses are various but she has a penchant for the ones from natural sources. Her collections are inspired by nature (Botanica, Bugs), by urbane culture (Funny Stories, Street Life), by the past and present history (Folk Attack, Pion’ieri/Pion’€™azi) and self discovery ( I AM, Sur-Faces, Articula).
ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES
2016 // Imacula Brooch
Between the initial sketch and the final object, Imacula brooch went through a complex production process. It’s the result of the first collaboration between the designer and NOD Makerspace. Of a spotless white, one face was slip casted with Limoges porcelain, then burned and polished. The second part is made entirely from solid oak, manually dark stained in Carla Szabo’s atelier. These two parts hide the lock – two strong magnets, that allow you to wear with each side in plain sight.
2015 // Sur-Faces collection
The “Sur-Faces” collection tells the story of the modern human, adapting himself and his life in a citadel; struggling not to forget his pure essence, deeply humane, delicate and sensitive. Each and every day, people show multiple facets of their personality. But the truth is unique. The truth lies in the heart. One creates facets as a protection, a surface shield to protect a more fragile inner side. If smile, anger or seriousness might be read on ones face, they sometimes act as a protection to prevent true emotions to come to the surface. Through the variety of the materials used the accessories in the “Sur-faces” collection express this complementarity. With rigid facets, shiny or silky surfaces, they decorate the body and feed the soul. 2014 // WOOD&WOOL capsule exhibition // ARTICULA collection
ARTICULA Collection is about charismatic determined and full of good energy people. It is about who is behind the concept ARTICULA, the Latin word for Articulated/To Articulate.
